I know there are lots of other awesome(er) distro/s out there, but this one's a little different(can't say in a good way or bad). But I think it deserves a mention, if you haven't heard about it already

What in the name of Thor's pinky is it?

According the their official website Tiny Core Linux, Micro Core Linux, 10MB Linux GUI Desktop, Live, Frugal, Extendable

"Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux GUI Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, and Fltk. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly. Also offered is Micro Core a 6 MB image that is the console based engine of Tiny Core. CLI versions of Tiny Core's program allows the same functionality of Tiny Core's extensions only starting with a console based system."

Why use it?

The reason I for one, use it is because of its small download size since I have a dialup connection and its refreshed loading state, ie every time I restart the system all the changes I made gets erased and any ****ing up I did in /usr/ or / folders gets undone since it runs mainly from RAM(it mounts the root system into memory to be precise).

Sure it has its obvious disadvantages like changes made to desktop, files saved in /home folder etc are lost too. But its has solution for that problem too, we can specify parameters like home=/mnt/sda1/home_folder or opt=/mnt/sda1/opt_folder which enables us to use specific folders as our home and opt folders, so that changes to user home folders get saved. It also provides backing up and restore options to save and restore any file that we want restored from other folders like /etc/passwd and shadow, so that added users get saved too.

Yes, it seems like a lot of work to gets things done but on the bright side its lightweight, you can make whatever you want out of it, no extra packages, so you don't get things you don't want and you can add only the packages you need. And more over it has a supportive user base, just visit the freenode irc channel or forums, so does other distros too, but still its a good feature :D. I think it can make at least a very good usb distro.

Download, Installation and configuration
Since there are a bunch of nice and brief articles explaining all those functions, I don't think its nice to regurgitate all that. So here are the places where you can find articles on them.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...re-current.iso - For the latest version of microcore.

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/...re-current.iso - For the latest version of tinycore.

Tiny Core Linux Installation - Installation

Start : Tiny Core Linux - Configuration

Index of /pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/3.x - Extension/package repository

Other useful articles - Tiny Core Linux

But in the end its all about personal preferences I guess. So give it a shot if you're bored, looking to try out new distros or just for the heck of it, I've been using it completely for a whole year, used Ubuntu before, it was too bloated(no offense) and had a few boot problems sometimes from poor maintenance on my side. Just my 2 cents.

Hey guys, I have a major problem. I was trying to get my driver to work, a little, Linksys WUSB600N version 2, using a fourm that I found online. Its in french though :D, so you'll have to run it through a translator. The link is located here : Crack-wifi.com FORUM / Installer Drivers RALINK RT3070 sous Ubuntu pour l'injection !

Anyway, back to the story. So using the broken English translation that was provided by Google translate, I worked through the whole tutorial until I got to the part where your supposed to restart your PC. Well I was going to download the file first and then restart the PC, but as I tried to download the file and get it working, my PC shut down on me.

NOTE: During this time I was getting a lot of error messages from my browser that it couldn't write to certain areas becase they were write protected for some reason.:glare: I have no idea if this had to do with the fact that my drive only has 3 GB of info left on it or not but thats just weird...

When I tried to reboot my PC and log in, I get these error messages:

1. Cannot log in as grant, trying /

so I click ok

2. Kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 3. Check your installation.

I think in a nice way its trying to tell me I fu**ed up

Can someone help me with this?
